1. Clarify your message

Too many people try to be everything to everyone when they start to raise their brand awareness through the media. In order to cut through the swathe of people all wanting the same media coverage, make sure you are very clear on your message. Before you start pitching your ideas to the media, run through the following key questions:

What is my ‘master message’? What is the common thread or filter that has run through everything I’ve done (both good and bad)?
What is my style? (This is also called ‘finding your voice’). Am I going to be formal and scientific, funky and fresh, or a combination of both?
What am I the expert at? What do I have years of experience doing? (and try to broaden the horizon to be a lot more than fitness)
How can I say less in more?

Aaron Whear was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and grew up living and breathing sport. After completing a Bachelor of Applied Science (Physical Education), he began his career in the fitness industry as a gymnasium instructor in 1992.

Aaron now runs Career Fitness, a consulting company based in Melbourne. Aaron works with organisations to bring health and fitness into the workplace with health assessments, exercise sessions and seminars based on his philosophy of the “game plan”.

When he isn’t working you can find him playing cricket, pumping weights in the gym, reading, or spending quality time with his family.

Professionally packaged information products are essential to move you from being branded as a one on one Personal Trainer, or as I like to call it ‘fitness boy or fitness girl’ to being seen as a leading health and fitness business person. Info products are also a great way to leverage your time and get you earning a lot more money in a lot less time. Earning money by the hour is finite, there are only so many hours in the day. But earning money from info products is infinite and is not limited by time, boundaries, or even industries.

How do I know this?

From learning the hard way. For years and years I resisted the urge to package information products as I thought the best way to get ahead was to roll up the sleeves and charge ahead working hour after hour after hour. While this gave me great experience in the industry for years I scraped by making ends meet, working my backside off. Then one day I had an epiphany, or more of a break down to be exact. I was burn out, tired out and my backside was hanging out – always chasing money, always making ends meet from one payment to the next. Sound familiar?

So my epiphany was to have 3 months out overseas, partying to excess and then finally remembering I had to come home, this time determined to get it right. Determined to get the balance between working hard and earning great money. And I have to say ever since then things have been totally different. I make great money and continue to love what I do.

I am just finishing my first book which will be out on the shelves in October. Secondly, my corporate business Switched On has been growing rapidly and most of my energy has been spent on this. Chronobiology is the study of circadian rhythms and has proven matching daily tasks to energy levels and mood will boost productivity and help you sustain performance throughout the day.

Scientists call the pattern by which our concentration levels vary during the day our concentration curve. Research shows mental and physical performance can vary by as much as 15% depending on the time of day.

Katrin Rochford is an amazing fitness entrepreneur based in Jerilderie with a population of 800 people. Kat has had 3 children in 3 years and was diagnosed with MS when her first born was just 3 weeks old. Originally from Toronto, Kat came to Australia as a backpacker and met her husband in Airlie beach, a year later she was married and living in a small country town. Kat has been involved in the fitness industry for 15 years and she manages the Jerilderie Sports Centre. She recently received the local Australian Sportsperson of the Year for 2006. In her spare time Kat is President of the Jerilderie preschool and works in the local community making sure school children tackle the obesity epidemic.

Q. What is the biggest business mistake you’ve ever made? And most importantly, what did this teach you?

Offering a program for free. My weight loss program went from 22 to 3 by offering it for nothing. You pay peanuts you get monkeys. People value more when they pay for it!

Remember the days when we actually posted a letter via “snail mail”? Those days are long gone and speed of communication is the new king. Sitting in the court of this new kingdom is email. It has revolutionised communication, making it simpler and faster for businesses to communicate.

IT market researcher Radicatti predicts daily emails sent and received will hit 331 billion worldwide by 2009. Such huge volumes mean that email consumes more and more of the average employee’s working day, with devastating implications for workplace productivity. Recent research by Emphasis reveals that senior staff in some of the UK’s Big Four Firms spend an average of £10,000 per person (A$25,000) annually on paying people to read and write emails.

Most of us have developed bad “email etiquette” because of the sheer convenience of the medium and the fact that we haven’t taken time out to think about how we can control, rather than be controlled by this tool

Q: How have you applied the PT Plus process to your business?

Move through the stages and learn from your mistakes. I was jumping ahead of myself and had not got the infrastucture or financial support network in place. Andrew’s income ladder helped me see what I hadn’t put in place further down the ladder which was crippling my move up the ladder. Once these issues were addressed progress has been swift.

The other process I have applied is to not discount!! I stopped offering discounted packages all the time and added value to what I already had plus learnt how to bundle packages and programs together.

And lastly ‘Spin the Medium’, I am currently developing different ways to deliver my products to a greater market.

Without proclaiming to promise you the world in a few words or less– there is a much easier way to really enjoy what you do and earn more money, without working yourself into the ground! The key is to focus on building a ‘heads up’ mentality. ‘Heads up’ skills include business strategy, marketing, planning, cash flow, brand awareness, specialisation and building a large distribution network. ‘Heads down’ skills include what we do in our trade, or ‘the day to day stuff’ including circuit and corporate fitness classes, nutrition and one on one sessions (PT, physio, chiro, etc), coaching, programming, periodisation, biomechanics and exercise technique.

Does a 'heads up' mentality really make a difference?

YES!! It makes a massive difference! How do I know this? Because I learnt the hard way – from years of mistakes and learning what is right after first of all perfecting what was wrong! Plus I found myself staring bankruptcy down the barrel! After receiving coaching and guidance from some great people along the way we developed a formula and started teaching this to other trainers and business owners; and the majority of them have at least doubled their business turnover too!

Writing and publishing articles has been demonstrated to be one of the most powerful ways to market your business. But it only works if you do. For most business owners there is a direct correlation between written information/authorship and revenue received. It works! Depending on your point of difference and type of business, it generally takes somewhere between 20 to 100 plus articles to really see spectacular results and increased to your website.

1. Set a goal for how many articles you will write each month

This will give you a clear outline of what needs to be done. Allocate specific time in your diary. Work out an article writing template – this will save hours and hours. As a minimum I think you should be writing 2 articles a month.

Day 1 of the Sydney BMC was run on Friday 1st September and we ploughed through loads of information, specifically focussed on getting to a $10K month - every month. A massive thankyou to the 26 people who enrolled for Sydney BMC – we really appreciate your support! A number of people have contacted the office asking when we are running another Sydney BMC and at this stage it won’t be until mid 2007.
